The Two Lighthouses of Presque Isle MI [Lake Huron] (July 14, 2014)

The "Old" 1840 Lighthouse
The "New" 1870 Lighthouse

The Place

Presque Isle (use the French pronunciation — "presk eel") has a beautiful, protected, natural harbor with a small mouth that expands into a deep, round harbor.  Many mariners have found shelter there.  In 1840, a 38 foot lighthouse was built at the mouth of the harbor.  Over the course of time, the trees grew up around it obscuring the light from view from the North.  So, in 1870 another 109 foot lighthouse was built further out on the point of land.  The 1840 lighthouse is referred to as the “old” lighthouse.  The 1870 lighthouse is referred to as the “new” lighthouse.  Both lighthouses and the keepers homes are open for tours.

The new lighthouse is in use today with an automated light.  We had heard that modern day mariners rely upon technological instrumentation to navigate the Great Lakes, however they continue to use the lighthouses along the coasts as “security blankets” verifying what their instruments are telling them.

The Adventure

We stopped here as a pretty place to have lunch and stayed for several hours to enjoy the lighthouses.
