Lighthouse AND Shipwreck at 40 Mile Point MI [Lake Huron] (July 16, 2014)

The Place

Sometimes you get to have your cake and ice cream at the same time!  At 40 Mile Point we had a wonderful lighthouse and a shipwreck on the beach that we could walk to, and walk on - at the same time.  What is greater than that?

The light and point are so named because the point is 40 miles from Mackinaw Point.  The lighthouse was constructed to fill in a blank spot where there was no light, so that there would be lights within viewing range continuously along the coast between Mackinaw Point and the Saint Clair River.

The Adventure

40 Mile Point is just is few miles from Hoeft State Park, so we stopped there on our way North up the coast.  It has a lighthouse built in 1896 that is attached to a 19th century duplex with the lightkeepers residence on one side, and the assistant light keepers house on the other.  The assistant's house has been restored and filled with antiques and is open to the public.  The other side is the residence of the caretaker of the property.  We climbed up to the top of the lighthouse, the view was magnificent.  Lake Huron has colors of green and blue that rival the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea.

The shipwreck on the beach is the starboard side of the SS Joseph S. Fay that sank in 1905.  The construction of wooden boats at that time had multiple layers of wooden planks that are held together with steel bars.  The outer and inner layers of planks went fore and aft.  The internal planks between the outer and inner layers were like ribs, coming up the sides from the keel.  The wood and bars are still there.
