Pretty, Pretty Luna Pier MI [Lake Erie] (July 7, 2014)

The Place

When we are on a long travel day, we like to find a nice place to stop and have a picnic lunch.  One of the advantages of traveling in a motor home is that you have your lunch food with you.  Russ was watching the map, and suggested we pull over to the tiny town of Luna Pier on the western end of Lake Erie.  And so we did.  It is minutes off of I-75.

Many years ago, Luna Pier was a long wooden pier with a dance hall on the end sitting out over Lake Erie.  Big Bands like Ozzie Nelson’s band came to play.  It was a big deal to watch the moon rise over the dance hall on Luna Pier.  Sadly, the pier burned down a long time ago.  Years later, when two townships on either side of the former pier decided to incorporate as a single town, they adopted the name of that famous pier for the name of the town.

The Adventure

Luna Pier is lovely.  It has a wide sand beach, and a breakwater that you can walk along.  There is a dike with picnic tables along the top.  We fell in love with the place and basked in the sun and the serene landscape.  Our stop for lunch turned into a 1 ½ hour rest stop, and we almost spent the night.  Well worth the time!
