A 5 mile bicycle ride from our campsite sits the striped West Quoddy Lighthouse. It marks the entrance to the Quoddy Narrows and Passamaquoddy Bay, and sits on the land designated as the easternmost point of the United States (more about that in another blog entry).
We visited there on a perfect Maine day. The air was cool with low humidity and the skies were bright blue and clear. From the lighthouse, we could see the Canadian Grand Manan Island 7 miles away, though it is usually shrouded with fog and difficult to see. Off in the far distance in another direction, we saw a few of the uninhabited Wolf Islands.
The first lighthouse was built at this location in 1808, with the current one being built in 1858. The lighthouse keepers home is used as a visitors center. The lighthouse itself was not open for us to go up it while we were there.
