Space Coast Beach and Birds [April 23-27, 2016]

Ibis

The area on the East Coast of Florida around Cape Kennedy is known as the Space Coast.  We camped here in a lovely, small, county-owned campground called Manatee Hammock Campground.  It is set on the Indian River, and the tall pieces of the Kennedy Space Center are visible across the water on the horizon.

Cocoa Beach

While we were in the area, we visited Cocoa Beach.  Nearby Port Canaveral is the starting point of many cruises, and we saw 3 cruise ships head out while we were visiting the beach.

Manatee Hammock Campground from the Indian River

We were able to go out on the Indian River in our kayaks.
Ibis flock

Ibis, ibis everywhere

Even in campsites

The campground is home to a flock of ibis, a few little blue heron, some snowy egrets and a great blue heron named Pete.  Pete lost one of his feet (still has the leg) and hangs around the fishermen, who feed him snacks.

The birds were very photogenic, and let us get close enough to them to take pictures.  So here are a few along with the view of the Indian River from the campground.
