Kentucky? Why are the ShorExplorers Visiting Kentucky? - Kentucky [September 12, 2015]

The goal of the ShorExplorers is to visit shorelines of big bodies of waters, oceans, gulfs, Great Lakes, etc.  Along the way we have also enjoyed the beauties of inland areas of this continent.  The States and Provinces that we have visited are recorded by stickers on a map on our door.  Visitors to the map often note a “hole” in the map of a State we have missed, Kentucky.  Once we started doing research about Kentucky we found many fun and interesting things to do there.  So with an unscheduled week, we headed west.

Kentucky is a lovely state with beautiful rolling hills.  To get there, many settlers, including Abraham Lincoln’s ancestors, made the difficult passage through the Cumberland Gap from the East Coast into Kentucky.  After having chugged our way up some pretty steep mountains, and braked our way down the other side as we traversed West Virginia, we are impressed with the first settlers who made this trip carrying their belongings and children.

One of the best known images of Kentucky are beautiful horses out in a green, green field surrounded by white painted fences.  Yup, they are here, everywhere around Lexington and even in areas away from that center of horse breeding and training.

So far we have really enjoyed ourselves in Kentucky.  The people here are welcoming and cheerful and speak with warm, rolling Southern accents.
